The LPWWA continues to work toward completion of the funding application for USDA funding that involves a significant compilation of pertinent environmental, engineering and archeological information, in addition to other USDA requirements. Initial information has been submitted to various agencies for review, which is likely to require several months to complete before the application can be considered finalized and ready to submit to the USDA. An update letter was sent via US Mail to all holders of tap commitments. Click here to view that letter or click here to view a map showing pipeline locations included in preliminary engineering proposal.

The LPWWA has made significant accomplishments towards the goal of building a rural domestic water supply system for western La Plata County.   LPWWA is working towards completion of an application to the USDA to finance the project.  As an initial step in this process, LPWWA has collected 660 tap commitments from property owners in the potential service area.  LPWWA is now working on engineering and environmental review in order to assess the feasibility of the system and complete the USDA application.  For a full update, please see the May 2010 Press Release.

The La Plata West Water Authority has overseen the construction of an intake structure in Lake Nighthorse (the Animas La Plata reservoir). The intake structure is the first phase of a rural water project that will some day provide treated domestic water to several entities that may include the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, southwestern La Plata County and users in the La Plata River Basin in New Mexico.

The La Plata West Water Authority Board and Advisory Board

The La Plata West Water Authority Board consists of three Board members appointed by the Animas/La Plata Water Conservancy District. Three members (who must reside within the boundaries of the La Plata Water Conservancy District) are also appointed by the La Plata Water Conservancy District. Typically, names of potential Board member candidates are submitted to each of the two Water Conservancy Districts for the consideration of the respective District Board for appointment to LPWWA. The Authority formation agreement provides that these six Board members appoint a seventh Board member. Terms for these board members are staggered three year terms. Additionally, the Authority Formation agreement provides for the designation by the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and Ute Mountain Ute Tribe of a representative on the Board for each respective Tribe. Board members in these positions are typically expected to attend several evening meetings each month and work on projects as needed for 6-8 hours per month in addition to meetings.

The Authority formation agreement also provides for Advisory Board members who can provide relevant and appropriate capacity, knowledge and resources to further the purposes of the Authority. The composition and number of members of the Advisory Board is flexible, based on needs and activities in a particular period of time or those associated with a particular task. If you have a particular area of knowledge or expertise such as public finance, marketing, contract administration, etc and would like to be involved but don't have the time to commit to full-time Board membership, you may be a good candidate for the Advisory Board. The Advisory Board is also intended to provide capacity in the form of individuals familiar with the project who may be willing to serve in case of a Board vacancy. Several current LPWWA Board members have previously served as Advisory Board members.
